A Nebraska man killed during a standoff with Springfield police at a local hotel last week was shot in the leg by an officer and then shot himself in the head, Illinois State Police said in a statement released Wednesday. Douglas Smith, 25, of Bellevue, Neb., died Friday after the confrontation at the Comfort Inn, 3442 Freedom Drive.

No indictment for former IDOT official accused of misconduct

A grand jury declined to indict former IDOT official Mike Stout last month after an inspector general’s report accused him of official misconduct, Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser said Thursday. The Office of Executive Inspector General released the  report Thursday, accusing Stout of improperly obtaining NASCAR passes for non-IDOT employees.
